Capture Record

English
A capture record is a small record that Nowstamp (날짜도장 in Korean) saves inside the file of a photo taken with its camera. It lets the app check later whether the original file of that photo has changed since it was taken. Capture records are off by default. You choose whether to turn them on the first time you open the app.
What it is
- At the moment of capture, the app signs the photo’s content (a hash of the image data), the capture time, and the stamp text with a key in your iPhone’s Secure Enclave. The signature goes into the photo file’s metadata.
- The signature is made on the device. There is no server and no account. The record exists only inside the photo file and never reaches the developer.
What you can check
- Whether the photo’s image data and capture time have changed since they were signed. If even one pixel or the capture time information has changed, the result is “Modified”.
- All you need is the original file. The check runs on the device, with no server or account (if the photo you pick is stored only in iCloud, iOS downloads it first).
- If the record was signed with this device’s key, the result also says “Taken on This Device”.
What it can’t tell you
- It is not a legal proof, and it isn’t notarized. It is a technical check that a photo hasn’t changed since it was taken.
- The time comes from the device’s clock. If the clock was changed before the photo was taken, that time is what gets recorded. The check can’t tell whether the clock was right.
- The file alone can’t show that the signing key really lived in an iPhone’s Secure Enclave. How the record was signed is a value the record states about itself.
- For a photo someone else sent you, the check can’t tell who made the record, even when the result is “Unmodified Since Capture”. Compare the key fingerprint shown in the photographer’s app (Settings > Capture Record) with the fingerprint of the photo.
- It can’t tell whether a scene was staged.
- Messaging apps usually break the record. Most of them recompress photos or remove their metadata, and a photo received that way shows as “Modified” or “No Capture Record”. Send the original file as it is, for example with AirDrop or file sharing. A photo edited in the Photos app also shows as “Modified” or “No Capture Record” (reverting it to the original makes the check pass again).
- The person checking needs this app too.
What’s in a record
- the capture time and its time zone, and the time the record was made
- the date and time text shown on the stamp, and the text you typed
- a hash of the photo’s content (a value that represents the photo; the photo cannot be reconstructed from it)
- the device model (for example
iPhone17,1), and the app version and build number - the public key of this device’s signing key and the kind of key, a random value that differs for each photo, and the signature
It contains no location and no name. Photos taken with the same device carry the same public key (reinstalling the app or switching devices may create a new key). Someone who receives several original photos taken with this app can therefore tell that they were taken with the same device. The public key does not reveal your name, phone number, or the device’s serial number. If you share a photo, the people you share it with can see its capture record.
Turning it on or off
- The first time you open the app, you choose whether to turn on “Capture Record”. It is off by default.
- You can change it later in Settings > Capture Record > “Add Capture Record”.
- When you turn it off, photos you take afterwards get no record. Records already inside saved photo files stay there.
- Imported photos, and the originals saved by “Also Save Original Photo”, never get a record.
How to check a photo
- Open the photo in the app’s album to see the result.
- For a photo someone sent you, go to Settings > Capture Record > Check a Photo and pick it from your photo library or from Files. Choose an original received by AirDrop or as a file.
- The result is one of “Unmodified Since Capture”, “Modified”, “No Capture Record” (there is no record, so there is no way to tell whether the photo was modified), or “Can’t Check” (for example, a record made by a newer version of the app).
